Over the next several weeks, I'm going to be blogging and posting about thoughts from "Perfectly Imperfect - the Art and Soul of Yoga Practice," by Baron Baptiste. Typically, I'm going to take one idea which is so often found in one sentence or one paragraph and expound upon its meaning and implications for us all.
We can start with just the title, "Perfectly Imperfect," (or should it be "imperfectly perfect"?). I think the big idea here is that when we stop thinking of all the so-called "imperfections" as flaws, errors, or mistakes, instead of it just being part of what and where we are in a temporal world, it results in a shift of mindset. This shift is a major IMPROVEMENT.
It is this mindset shift that he is advocating for with which I have to agree. Over the course of time, I have seen this idea in many different settings across many different cultures and eras of human history. He puts it succinctly throughout the book: It is a truth that we live in an imperfect world. What creates worry, anxiety, and stress beyond human capacity is attempting to view it as, or make it into, a perfect world, instead of accepting it as is. Attempting to create perfection or forcing oneself to delusionally believe in that perfection is a major cause of human distress and suffering.
So right here, today, accept that things are perfectly imperfect. Change your mindset, change your life. When we accept the reality of where we are, there is a much better chance of creating a greater and more fulfilling life!
