I’ve heard many people state that they’re hesitant to try yoga because they’re “not flexible enough” or they feel they won’t be “good at it”. I’m here to bust this myth! One of the amazing things about yoga is that ANYONE can do it! There is a huge array of styles, props, and modifications that make yoga accessible and easy to learn for everyone.
What is yoga? At its baseline, yoga is a practice that focuses on uniting the body, mind, and breath. If you’ve ever laid down on your back and taken a deep breath, you’ve already done yoga before! For beginners, a restorative or a flow class is a great place to start. (Try move and melt!) You can begin with simple poses which incorporate the breath, then eventually warm up the limbs and move into a flow.
There are a wide variety of ways to practice yoga, and the possibilities are endless. What I love about yoga is that everyone gets a different benefit out of it. Some practice simply to slow down and stretch. Others incorporate it into their workout routine to sweat and build strength and mobility. Yoga can also be a deep mental practice of focus, introspection, and self-discovery. In many cultures, yoga is incorporated into their daily spiritual practices and reflections.
In my own practice, Yoga began as a part of my exercise routine. I simply enjoyed the stretch and attending group classes to move and stretch. Today, after many years of exploration and regular practice, yoga is a super important part of my life and has helped me get to know myself on a deeper level and contributed to a huge amount of self-growth. Taking time to stretch, breathe, and sit in stillness is an insanely beneficial practice— many of my biggest revelations have come to me during restorative yoga practices.
The beauty of yoga is that your practice frequency and style will ebb and flow, as everything does. Let your intuition guide the way! There is no “right way” to do yoga. At the end of the day, you are the master of your own life.
If you're reading this... try it out! #trustme
